{"id":154,"date":"2014-05-27T01:48:35","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T01:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pukara.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=154"},"modified":"2026-08-11T10:20:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T14:20:09","slug":"teaching","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pukara.org\/?page_id=154","title":{"rendered":"Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am an Associate Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/academics\/anthropology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthropology<\/a> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smith College<\/a><\/strong> and I am on the Faculty Advisory Committees for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/academics\/departments-programs-courses\/latin-american-latinoa-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Latin American &amp; Latino\/a Studies<\/a> (LAS), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/academics\/archaeology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Archaeology Minor (ARC),<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/academics\/museums-concentration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Museums Concentration<\/a> (MUX). During my first decade at Smith, I had a Five College faculty appointment, which means that I taught one course every fall at Mount Holyoke College and one every spring at Amherst College. There is a vibrant community of archaeologists in the Five Colleges&#8211; check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umass.edu\/anthropology\/faculty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U Mass Amherst Anthropology<\/a> website&#8211; and a chapter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/aiawesternmass.org\" target=\"_blank\">Archaeological Institute of America<\/a> in Western Massachusetts, which hosts a number of speakers throughout the academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of courses, each fall I teach <a href=\"http:\/\/pukara.org\/?page_id=530\"><em>Introduction to Archaeology<\/em> <\/a>at Smith College and I offer some variety of the following courses throughout the school year:\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/pukara.org\/?page_id=534\">Archaeology of Food<\/a>;<\/em>\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/pukara.org\/?page_id=482\">Collecting the Past: Art and Artifacts of the Ancient Americas<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/pukara.org\/?page_id=532\">Archaeological Method, Theory &amp; Practice<\/a>; Museum Anthropology &amp; South American Archaeology.\u00a0<\/em>Please contact me if you would like a copy of a syllabus or have questions or comments about the course content. I have also taught an undergraduate and graduate-level archaeological field school at Pukara, Peru (<a href=\"http:\/\/pukarapuno.blogspot.com\/2009\/\" target=\"_blank\">2009<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/pukarapuno.blogspot.com\/2010\/08\/\" target=\"_blank\">2010<\/a>) and look forward to taking students to the field again in the upcoming years.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pukara.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2009_field_school_group.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pukara.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2009_field_school_group-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"2009_field_school_group\" class=\"wp-image-359\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, students interested in pursuing archaeology as a career\u00a0should contact professional archaeologists in colleges and universities, museums and other cultural institutions, cultural resource management firms (CRM), and government agencies with questions.
